Tailwind CSS v4.3.0 is now available, bringing a wave of new utilities and developer-experience improvements. This release introduces utilities for container queries, scrollbars, zoom, and tabs, along with more flexible @variant usage and key bug fixes for Vite and PostCSS integrations.

Key changes in v4.3.0

  • Added @container-size utility for container query length units (e.g., cqw, cqh, cqi, cqb, cqmin, cqmax).
  • Added scrollbar-auto, scrollbar-thin, and scrollbar-none utilities for scrollbar-width, plus scrollbar-thumb-* and scrollbar-track-* color utilities for scrollbar-color.
  • Added scrollbar-gutter-* utilities to control scrollbar-gutter.
  • Added zoom-* utilities for the non-standard zoom property (values like 50, 75, 90, 95, 100, 105, 110, 125, 150).
  • Added tab-* utilities for the tab-size property.
  • Allowed using @variant with stacked variants (e.g., @variant hover:focus { … }) and compound variants (e.g., @variant hover, focus { … }).
  • Added support for --default(…) in --value(…) and --modifier(…) for functional @utility definitions.
  • Fixed @plugin to resolve package JavaScript entries instead of browser CSS entries when using @tailwindcss/vite.
  • Fixed relative @import and @plugin paths resolving from the wrong directory with @tailwindcss/vite.
  • Ensured CSS files containing @variant are processed by @tailwindcss/vite.
  • Resolved imports relative to base when result.opts.from is not provided with @tailwindcss/postcss.
  • Canonicalization now preserves significant _ whitespace in arbitrary values and adds parentheses when removing whitespace from arbitrary values.

These additions make Tailwind even more versatile for modern UI development. The new scrollbar utilities provide cross-browser control over scrollbar appearance without custom CSS. Container query support via @container-size enables responsive designs based on parent size. The @variant enhancements open up complex styling patterns directly in utility classes. Bug fixes for Vite and PostCSS plugins ensure reliable builds, while improved canonicalization reduces surprises with arbitrary values.
