The PostgreSQL RPM repository has begun retiring its repositories for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 15 SP6, also known as 15.6, following the end of upstream general support for that service pack on December 31, 2025. The affected packages are not simply disappearing: they are being relocated to the PostgreSQL ZYPP archive, where every PostgreSQL major version previously built for these minor releases remains downloadable, including PostgreSQL 18.
The change affects administrators who still configure their systems against the main RPM repository for SLES 15.6. Concretely:
- The SLES 15.6 repositories are retired from the main PostgreSQL RPM repository and moved to the PostgreSQL ZYPP archive.
- All PostgreSQL major versions built for SLES 15.6, up to and including PostgreSQL 18, are available in the archive.
- Archived repositories are no longer updated, so they will not receive future package releases or fixes.
- The archived repositories section of the repository packages page at
https://zypp.postgresql.org/repopackages/#archivedreposgenerates the repository file and install commands for each distribution version, architecture and PostgreSQL version. - Users still on SLES 15.6 should either upgrade to a newer service pack (SP7 at the time of writing) or switch to the archive.
Questions can be directed to the [email protected] mailing list or raised as a ticket in the project's issue tracker.
For developers and DBAs running PostgreSQL on SUSE, this is a reminder that the RPM repository follows upstream distribution lifecycles. Systems left on SLES 15.6 will keep working with archived packages, but they will miss security and bug-fix updates delivered through the main repository. The practical path is to move production hosts to SP7 so the standard repository configuration continues to serve current packages, and to reserve the ZYPP archive for legacy or pinned environments where an upgrade is not yet possible. Auditing zypper repository definitions for the retired SLES 15.6 URLs is a sensible first step before the next maintenance window.
