The PoWA team is pleased to announce the release of powa-archivist 5.1.2, the core extension of the PostgreSQL Workload Analyzer (PoWA). This update introduces a powerful new feature: per-module retention, contributed by Marc Cousin. Previously, retention settings applied uniformly across all collected metrics. Now, administrators can define different retention periods for individual modules, offering fine-grained control over historical data management.
This flexibility enables more efficient storage utilization. You can keep high-resolution data for critical modules (e.g., those tracking specific workloads or queries) while automatically purging less important data sooner. For developers and DBAs using PoWA for PostgreSQL performance monitoring, this release provides finer control over historical data, reducing disk usage without sacrificing insights into critical areas. The feature is particularly valuable in large-scale deployments with limited storage or strict compliance requirements.
Key changes in this release:
- New per-module retention capability, allowing distinct retention periods for each module.
- Global retention now acts as a fallback when per-module settings are not defined.
- Enhanced storage management by prioritizing important metrics and automatically cleaning up less critical data.
