Devart has shipped dbForge 2026.2, the latest update to its unified ecosystem of database tools, and the headline addition for PostgreSQL users is a brand-new embedded PostgreSQL Debugger. Previously, troubleshooting server-side PL/pgSQL logic meant scattering RAISE NOTICE statements through functions and procedures; the new debugger targets that workflow directly inside dbForge Studio for PostgreSQL.

Key changes in this release:

  • Embedded PostgreSQL Debugger: set breakpoints, step through code line by line, and monitor variables, expressions and query results while code executes. When an exception is raised, it highlights the exact offending line.
  • Visual object editors for event triggers, functions and procedures, replacing raw DDL editing for those object types.
  • dbForge AI Assistant gains broader context awareness via file attachments and now supports models from Anthropic and OpenAI.
  • The AI Assistant is now available in a free Express edition.
  • SQL refactoring enhancements and quicker access to test data generation.
  • A new "Last modified" column in schema comparison documents and reports.

The debugger integrates into the existing Studio shell, so stepping through a function does not require switching tools or attaching an external client. Monitoring expressions and query results at a breakpoint is particularly useful for set-based PL/pgSQL, where intermediate row state is often the real source of a bug.

For developers, the practical impact is faster root-cause analysis of server-side code and less reliance on print-style debugging. The object editors reduce hand-written CREATE OR REPLACE churn, while file attachments let the AI Assistant reason over schema dumps and migration scripts rather than only the current editor buffer. Model choice also lets teams align the assistant with whatever provider their organization already approves, and the Express edition lowers the barrier for evaluating the workflow before committing to a license.
