Docker has announced the public beta of Docker VMM, a complete overhaul of the virtualization layer that powers Docker Desktop on Mac and Windows. This release is a significant step forward, addressing long-standing performance and stability issues that developers have faced. The new VMM is designed from the ground up to be faster, more efficient, and more reliable, with a focus on improving the developer experience.

The public beta introduces a new architecture that replaces the previous virtualization backend. Key changes include:

  • Leaner and faster: The new VMM is a custom-built, lightweight virtual machine monitor that reduces boot times and lowers resource consumption compared to the previous HyperKit-based system on Mac and the Hyper-V approach on Windows.
  • Improved file sharing: File sharing performance has been drastically enhanced, especially for bind mounts and volumes. On macOS, this is achieved through a new VirtioFS-based implementation, while Windows uses a similar optimized approach. Developers can expect up to 3x faster I/O operations in typical workflows.
  • Enhanced networking: Networking now uses a redesigned virtual network stack, providing lower latency and higher throughput. This is particularly beneficial for services that rely on inter-container communication.
  • Better resource management: The VMM introduces more granular control over CPU and memory allocation, with new options in settings.json to set a fixed amount of memory and CPU for the VM.
  • Simplified installation: The beta can be enabled by opting in from the Docker Desktop Settings > General > Use Docker VMM option. It requires Docker Desktop version 4.30 or later.
  • Command-line integration: The new VMM works with the existing docker CLI and does not require any changes to your current workflow.

For developers, this translates into a more responsive Docker Desktop, faster container startup times, and a significantly improved build and test experience. The reduced overhead also means that you can run more containers simultaneously without hitting performance bottlenecks.

The public beta is a critical step in validating the new architecture. Docker encourages developers to test it and provide feedback through the Docker Desktop Feedback tab. While the beta is stable enough for daily use, it is not yet recommended for production environments. This overhaul is a strong signal of Docker's commitment to performance and developer experience, and it will likely become the default in future releases.
