Cloudflare Hyperdrive MySQL Support Reaches General Availability

Cloudflare has announced that Hyperdrive support for MySQL is now generally available (GA). Hyperdrive is Cloudflare's distributed database connection pooler that links Workers to SQL databases, holding warm SQL connections open across its global network so each request does not pay the cost of a fresh handshake. Until now the product only supported Postgres; the MySQL protocol beta opened last year and has now been hardened for production.

According to Cloudflare, the gap between beta and GA amounted to roughly 20 bug fixes in a trenchcoat. During the beta the team tracked how often client connections from a Worker ended in a Hyperdrive-related error, validating real-world usage against a production availability target of 99.99%. Customer feedback surfaced a rare, subtle bug in the production environment that required deeper investigation.

The concrete changes behind the GA milestone:

  • MySQL protocol support is now production-ready, matching the reliability of the existing Postgres handling.
  • A suite of roughly 20 bug fixes was shipped to close reliability gaps found during the beta.
  • Continuous tracking of Worker connection errors now backs the 99.99% availability target.
  • A rare caching bug discovered through beta customer feedback was diagnosed and resolved.

Why it matters: connection setup is a common source of latency and failure for Workers talking to relational databases. A managed pooler removes that boilerplate and centralises connection reuse on Cloudflare's network, so developers can point Workers at MySQL without hand-rolling pooling logic. The GA label also means MySQL users can treat Hyperdrive as a supported dependency rather than an experiment, and the error-tracking discipline behind the release gives a measurable reliability bar to hold the service to.
