Traditional secure web gateways have followed the same pattern for nearly 30 years: traffic matches a condition, then a terminal action fires such as Allow, Block, Isolate, or Log. Cloudflare argues this model handles the common case but has a ceiling that complex environments hit regularly. Earlier this year the company outlined its vision for a truly programmable SASE platform, noting that public APIs, Terraform providers, webhooks and alerting are not enough to qualify as programmable. True programmability, Cloudflare says, means running your own arbitrary code inline in the policy evaluation path, at the moment a security decision is made. To deliver that, Cloudflare is integrating Cloudflare Gateway and DLP (Data Loss Prevention) with the entirety of its edge computing platform.
The concrete changes announced are:
- A new Gateway action type called Forward, which lets a request continue on after custom logic runs rather than terminating at a fixed verdict.
- Custom validation functions that execute inside the policy evaluation path, so developers can encode logic specific to their own environment.
- Integration with the whole edge computing platform, meaning the same runtime powering Cloudflare Workers is available to Gateway and DLP policy decisions.
- Availability to all Zero Trust customers, according to the announcement.
For developers, the significance is architectural: security policy stops being a fixed set of terminal outcomes and becomes a programmable execution environment. Teams with unusual routing, compliance or data-handling requirements can now express them as code evaluated at decision time instead of contorting them into static allow/block rules or bolting on out-of-band tooling. Because the logic runs on Cloudflare's edge, it executes where the traffic is evaluated rather than in a separate service, which should reduce latency and operational glue. The tradeoff is that custom code in the decision path inherits production responsibility: bugs, timeouts and edge cases now directly affect whether traffic is allowed through.
